MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
—Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team closed out the first day of the 2015 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships with a 16-point lead over its conference opponents, earning 44 points.  Trailing Eastern are Akron (28), Central Michigan (20), Kent State (18), and Buffalo (13).  On the first day of action, Eastern had two MAC champions crowned, along with one runner-up and one bronze medalist.

At the end of the first four events in the heptathlon, Solomon Ijah (Murrieta, Calif.-Murrieta Valley) trails Akron's Jordan Latimer by 220 points, sitting in second with 3,020 points, while Levi Selvig (Flushing, Mich.-Flushing Community) is in sixth with 2,769 points.  Ijah won the shot put portion of the competition, throwing 14.94 meters/49 feet 0.25-inches, as well as the 60m dash in 7.05 seconds.  In the 60m, Selvig finished fourth in a career-best 7.28 seconds, and also paced Ijah in the long jump and high jump, finishing fourth in both events as Ijah took second.  Selvig jump 6.49 meters/21 feet 3.50-inches in the long jump and Ijah had a distance of 6.35 meters/20 feet 10.00-inches.  In the high jump, Selvig had a season-best clearance of 1.92 meters/6 feet 3.50-inches, while Ijah cleared 1.89 meters/6 feet 2.25-inches.

The Eagles had their first medalist early in the meet, with Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky) taking home second in the weight throw with a toss of 21.09 meters/ 69 feet 2.50-inches.  Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill.-Williamsville) threw for a distance of 17.96 meters/58 feet 11.25-inches, finishing seventh, while Andrew Wentz (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) took eighth with a launch of 17.15 meters/56 feet 3.25-inches.

Shortly afterwards, the Green and White had its first champion of the meet crowned.  Donald Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka) outleapt the favored Latimer by three inches to claim the title in the long jump, notching a personal record of 7.57 meters/24 feet 10-inches.  Also scoring for the Eagles was Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay), who took fourth with a mark of 7.18 meters/23 feet 6.75-inches.  Unfortunatley, Brown did not qualify to the championship heat in the 400 meters, but the Green and White did have two other athletes make the cut.  Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa.-Greater Latrobe Senior) earned the top seed in 48.63 seconds, while Cameron Bolton (Missouri City, Texas-Hightower) finished fifth in 49.13 seconds.

Bolton also competed in the 200m prelims, earning the second seed in 21.95 seconds.  Joining Bolton in the finals tomorrow will be Matthew Williams (Moreno Valley, Calif.-Vista del Lago) in 22.40 seconds, while Brown just missed out on qualifying in 22.41 seconds.

In the prelims of the 60m hurdles and 60m dash, the Green and White had four total athletes qualify to tomorrow's final heat.  In the hurdles, Bryce Lindsey (New Middletown, Ohio-Fairfield Senior) matched his career best of 8.13, claiming the fourth seed in the finals, while Ijah clocked in at 8.19 seconds for sixth.  Wayne Blanchard (Toledo, Ohio-St. Francis de Sales) matched his personal record of 6.90 seconds to take the fifth seed going into the championship, followed by Kevin Snead (Richmond, Va.-George Wythe (Pima CC)) in 6.97 seconds for sixth.

The Green and White qualified two athletes to the finals in the 800m run.  Scott Bradley (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) finished third in the prelims in 1:55.08, and will be accompanied by Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wis.-Bradford), who took seventh in 1:55.60.  Stephen Sparks (Lancaster, Ohio-Lancaster) also competed, finishing 10th in 1:56.80.

In the 5000m, Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) claimed his first MAC indoor title in a personal-best 14:24.53, winning by more than a second ahead of Akron's Kyle Cochrun.  Also earning a medal finish was Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge (Alderson Broaddus)), who claimed third in a career record of 14:27.64.  The top-three spots came down to the wire, as the medalists finished within three seconds of each other and the rest of the field was nearly 10 seconds later. Bringing up the rear for the Green and White was Harry Dixon (Nelson, New Zealand-Nayland College), clocking in at 15:02.87 for seventh.

Closing out the day's action, the lineup of Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis.-River Falls), Mark Cooke (Edison, N.J.-John P. Stevens), Jason Ervin (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Farmington), and Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich.-Mason) finished third in the distance medley relay in 10:12.33. Buffalo's lineup had a commanding win in 10:04.47, followed by host Central Michigan in 10:09.90.
