ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)
—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team moved up one spot in team standings, finishing the first two days with 24 points at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.  Defending champions Kent State University currently holds the lead with 47 points, a large margin over current second-place Miami (33).

The morning started out heavily in favor of the Green and White, as both Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier) and Kate Wolanin (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) finished the heptathlon with personal records to land on the podium.  Wolanin took seventh with 4,951 points, while Chauchard claimed the first MAC championship crown of the meet with 5,574 points, breaking the MAC meet record and amassing the second-best score in EMU program history.  Chauchard won the first two events, jumping 5.64 meters/18 feet 6-inches in the long jump and setting a personal record in the javelin throw at 36.82 meters/120 feet 10-inches.  She went into the final event with a 92-point lead over Buffalo's Emma Siuciak and established her position atop the rankings with a runner-up finish in the 800m.  Chauchard finished just .62 seconds behind Northern Illinois' Latesha Bigby in a personal-best 2:15.94.  Wolanin had a breakthrough performance in the 800m as well, finishing fourth in 2:18.84.  The Oxford, Mich. native set an additional two personal records during the day, jumping 5.41 meters/17 feet 9-inches for fifth in the long jump and threw for a distance of 24.46 meters/80 feet 3-inches in the javelin.

In the only other event of the day on the field, Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich.-Grand Rapids Christian) took ninth in the finals flight of the long jump.  The freshman leapt 5.55 meters/18 feet 2.50-inches, just three centimeters shy of her personal best.  Tiara Oates (Rochester, Mich.-Stoney Creek) took 16th at 5.40 meters/17 feet 8.75 inches.

In the sprints, Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams) was the top qualifier in both the 100m and 200m preliminaries, crossing the line at 11.86 and a career-best 24.00 seconds.  Joining McKinney in the championship round tomorrow will be Danielle Clark (Paramaribo, Suriname-Ewald P. Meyer Lyceum), who finished third in the 100m prelims at 12.09 and eighth in the 200m in 24.65 seconds.  The pair of Morgan Yeadon (Indianapolis, Ind.-Pike) and Iesha Hardiman (Santa Clara, Calif.-Adrian Wilcox) came close to matching their personal bests in the 400m, but just missed out on the championship heat.  Yeadon took ninth in 56.38, while Hardiman's time of 56.67 was good for 12th

Following her heptathlon crown, Chauchard competed in the preliminary round of the 100m hurdles alongside her compatriot, Pauline Chiariglione (Ajaccio, France-University of Nice).  Chauchard paced the duo at 14.51, while Chiariglione finished in 14.63 seconds, but both just missed the mark on qualifying for tomorrow's round.  However, Chiariglione went on to earn a spot in the final heat of the 400m hurdles after finishing fourth in the prelims in 1:01.62.

The 800m run resulted in a personal record for Rebecca Quaintance (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) in 2:16.98, but the highly competitive field once again knocked an Eagle out of appearing in the final round.  More fortuitous was the 1500m, which was paced by Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) in 4:30.73. Taylor Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Mott (Lansing CC)) and Marina Manjon-Rivadulla (Barcelona, Spain-Escola University) also earned spots in the championship of the 1500m, coming in at 4:33.06 for seventh and 4:40.49 for 12th, respectively.

The evening ended just as the day began, with the crowning of a MAC champion for the Green and White.  Despite the sudden onset of rain during the 3000m steeplechase, Voronko was able to break her own EMU record en route to a victory, finishing in 10:05.94.  The Russian native was followed in close pursuit by Mackenzie Chojnacky and Liz Weiler of Toledo, but was able to pull ahead and win by over four seconds to claim her first MAC championship of the meet.  She will attempt to complete a sweep of three titles when she goes out for the 1500m as well as the 5000m during tomorrow's events.  Voronko was joined on the podium by Kayla Pfund (Shelby Twp., Mich.-Lutheran North), who took eighth in 10:59.16.

Action will kick off with the high jump tomorrow, May 17, at 10:30 a.m., while competition on the track will start at 1 p.m. with the 4x100m relay.  Live results will be available through timerhub.com and more information can be found at mac-sports.com.
