Chauchard wins pentathlon, Voronko takes 5000m run

FINDLAY, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)--Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team sent just six athletes to compete in the Findlay Classic, Jan. 24, but the Eagles returned to Ypsilanti after shattering two EMU records.
Junior Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) continued to scorch the competition on the field, as she won the 5000m run by a wide margin, clocking in at 16:32.44, over two minutes ahead of the next competitor. Voronko set not only a personal-best in the event, but she broke the school record set by Courtney Calka in 2011, when the former Eagle ran the event in 16:37.17.
The remaining five Eagles competed in the pentathlon. Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier) set the standard for the meet with her score of 3,941 points. The score beats out Lela V. Nelson's 2004 count of 3,851 by nearly a 100-point margin. Chauchard led the Green and white in the 60m hurdles, finishing in 8.82, and threw the shot put for 41 feet 3.00-inches. Pauline Chiariglione (Ajaccio, France-University of Nice) came in second in the pentathlon with 3,759 points. The senior led in the 800m run, coming in at 2:19.55, and leapt for a distance of 18 feet 0.25-inches in the long jump.
Senior co-captain Kate Wolanin (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) led all athletes in the high jump as she set a personal record, clearing 5 feet 8.50-inches.
The Green and White will host the final home meet of the 2013-14 season Saturday, Feb. 1. The squad will host a quadrangular meet, which is also an Eagles Unite event.
