YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University soccer team overcame a two-goal deficit to earn a 3-3 draw against Oakland University Sunday afternoon, Aug. 19, at Scicluna Field. Bianca Rossi scored a pair of goals including the game-tying tally and Angela Vultaggio chipped in with her second of the year.
The Eagles (0-1-1) snapped an eight-match losing skid to Golden Grizzlies (1-0-1) dating back to the 1998 campaign. EMU trailed by as many as two, 3-1, after OU scored three straight first-half goals in a 13-minute span, but Rossi netted back-to-back goals in the 43rd and 54th minutes to pull the home team even.
Rossi's two-goal performance was the second of her young career, with the other occurrence on Oct. 21, 2011, in a 5-1 win against Ball State University.
Both teams posted several quality scoring chances through the end of regulation and two 10-minute overtimes, but neither side was able to add the tiebreaker. Oakland outshot Eastern Michigan, 26-11, but the Green and White was able to connect on three of its seven shots on goal.
Senior Jessica Thomas turned in a solid effort on defense and recorded two assists on the afternoon. Juniors Cara Cutaia and Stephanie Clarke were also credited with assists, while Vultaggio chipped in with one helper as well. Redshirt freshman Jenna O'Dell made eight saves in goal for EMU.
As was the case in the season opener against the University of Pittsburgh, Vultaggio got Eastern Michigan off to an early 1-0 lead when she headed a crossing pass from Thomas into a yawning right side for her second of the year in the 10th minute.
Oakland then struck for three straight goals beginning in the 12th minute when Kyla Kellermann put home her fourth goal in two games. Marlen Knoph scored her first of the year in the 21st minute and Stephanie Pliarski did the same four minutes later.
The 3-1 score remained until the 43rd minute, when Cutaia came rushing up the right side toward the goal line. The junior midfielder fed a pass to Vultaggio, who slipped the ball into the middle where a sprinting Rossi found the empty corner for her first of the season and brought the Eagles back to within a goal, 3-2.
Eastern Michigan's offense was dangerous to begin the second half as Vultaggio's point-blank chance resulted in a save by Payj O'Shea in the 51st minute. But then just three minutes later, Clarke made a perfect cross-field pass to Rossi who one-timed the ball out of mid air and looped it into the top shelf to tie the game, 3-3.
In the 61st minute, Martha Stevens appeared to have her first-career goal to put the Eagles in the lead, but the play was just offside and the match remained deadlocked. O'Dell came up big in goal in the 79th minute, when she punched a rising shot from the top of the penalty area over the net and out of harm's way.
In overtime, Sarah Deakin narrowly missed scoring her first collegiate goal when she sent a shot rolling wide of the left goalpost. Minutes later, Vultaggio broke free up the middle and fired a shot which was corralled by O'Shea.
Oakland had one last go at goal in the final 60 seconds off a free kick, but the ensuing attack was fended off successfully as the final horn sounded.
The Eagles wrap up their three-game homestand Sunday, Aug. 26, with a 1 p.m. matchup against Butler University.
