Eastern Downs Huskies in 3-1 Win at Northern Illinois

The Eagles picked up their first Mid-American Conference win in DeKalb, Ill.

The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team picked up their first Mid-American Conference win of the season Saturday, Sept. 24 at Northern Illinois. EMU took the first set 28-26 and dropped the second by the same score. After the break, Eastern came out to win the final two sets, 25-15 and 25-20.

With the win the Eagles moves to 13-3 on the year and 1-1 in MAC play, while Northern Illinois fell to 12-4 and 1-1 in conference tilts.

Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) led the Eagles' offense with 18 kills and 13 digs, while Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) had 12 kills and a .370 attack percentage (12-2-27). Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) racked up 11 kills and Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) recorded a double-double with 44 assists and 10 digs. Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) set a season-high with 34 digs. Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) and Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) led the defense at the net with five total blocks each.

Iaquaniello and Roback paced the Eagles' offense in the opening set with six kills each. Both hitters were able to maintain a .600 attack percentage as they each converted on 6-of-10 total attacks. Mason was able to rack-up 17 assists in the opening frame and although it took a 28-26 final, the Eagles were able to take a 1-0 lead to start the match while keeping a .429 attack percentage (19-1-42).

Iaquaniello upped her kill total to 12 after the second set as she led Eastern in the frame. EMU had just a .182 hitting percentage (12-4-44) in the set. Despite dropping the second set 28-26, Mason was able to pick up 12 assists and two blocks in the set as the Eagles went into the locker room tied at one-set.

Baker used a pair of blocks and three kills to help the Green and White to a 25-15 third set win. The Eagles took advantage of Northern Illinois' .000 attack percentage (10-10-42) and took a 2-1 set with ease.

Eastern yet again built on NIU's offensive struggles as they topped the Huskies in the final set 25-20. Northern Illinois had just a .022 attack percentage (11-10-45) and EMU's 11 kills in the fourth frame led the Eagles to their first conference win of the year.

Eastern continues the 2011 schedule Thursday, Sept. 29, when they travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich. and square off with Central Michigan University. The Eagles and Chippewas hit the court at McGuirk Arena at 7 p.m. Thursday night.
