EMU drops seventh straight in tight battle with Bobcats

ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team began its trek through the 2011 Mid-American Conference schedule Friday afternoon, Sept. 23, with a 1-0 road loss to Ohio University. Cat Rogers scored the game's only goal in the 83rd minute.
The Eagles (0-7-1; 0-1 MAC) have now been shutout in four consecutive games during a losing streak which has reached seven matches. The Bobcats (4-5-0; 1-0 MAC) recorded their second straight shutout as well as their first victory against EMU since the 2006 season.
Chelsea Detrick was responsible for two of the five EMU shots on goal with Cara Cutaia, Molli Krick, and Marisa Kozikowski recording the others. Maggie Manville made five saves in goal for the Eagles in her sixth consecutive start.
Scoring chances were limited for both teams, but the Eagles put together several offensive rushes in the opening half. Detrick broke to the goal but was denied on a good save by Ohio goalkeeper Mattie Liston in the 23rd minute. Then in the 36th minute, Stephanie Clarke nearly captured her first of the season after blasting a shot wide of the far goalpost.
With the contest still tied late in the second half, a pair of shots from Cutaia failed to find the back of the net as Liston came out to make a save on one shot. The other attempt was wide of the target.
Several minutes later, Ohio responded with a counter-attack which resulted in the game's lone goal. A long-range shot from Rogers found its way over the head of Manville to give the Bobcats a 1-0 edge.
EMU pressed hard in the closing minutes to find the equalizer, but the Ohio defense held the Eagles without a shot as time expired.
The Green and White are back in action Sunday afternoon, Sept. 25, at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
