Box Score
RICHMOND, Va. (EMUEagles.com) – Ashley Rodrigues gave the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team a 1-0 win with a goal in the 32nd minute, defeating Richmond Friday night to open the VCU/Impact Sports Invitational Tournament.
Rodrigues' second goal of the season came in the 32nd minute off a missed shot by Paige Sheridan. The senior, who has a knack for always being around the ball, was able to hammer home the rebound and give the Eagles an early lead.
It turned out that goal would be the difference and also become her second game-winning goal of the season and fifth of her career. Her first came in a 1-0 win over Eastern Illinois in the season opener back on Aug. 28 at Scicluna Field.
At the end of the first half, the Eagles had a 12-6 advantage in shots with four of those coming on goal for the Green and White. Deana Kinter had three shots from point-blank range early in the first half, one sailing high, another hitting square against the crossbar, and the last going wide.
Richmond mounted a comeback in the second half, however, closing the gap to 12-10 by the 58th minute. In the 60th minute, Carissa Wilson nearly extended the EMU lead with shot from inside the box, but it ricocheted off the right post.
Richmond continued to apply the pressure up front, but Maggie Manville rose to the challenge, making six saves en route to her second win of the season and second shutout in as many starts. The Eagles tallied 17 shots in the match compared to 13 for the Spiders.
Eastern Michigan will take on Loyola (Md.) in their second and final game of the tournament on Sunday, while Richmond will take on host VCU. The Eagles and Greyhounds is set to begin at 1 p.m. Live stats and an in-game blog will be provided by VCU.
