Jenny Scherer hits eighth home run of the year in defeat

, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a 7-4 Mid-American Conference contest to the University of Akron, Saturday, April 4 at Lee R. Jackson Field. Down 7-4 in the top of the seventh, the Eagles loaded the bases but were unable to plate a run.
 
With the loss, EMU falls to 13-21 (1-6 MAC) on the year. Sophomore pitcher Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy's Priory) was charged with the loss, pitching 3.2 innings while giving up seven runs on seven hits. Michelle Hletko (Westmont, Ill.-Westmont) pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, giving up only one hit while fanning two batters.
 
Junior Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) hit her eighth home run of the season in the loss, giving her 30 in her career. She is the first hitter in EMU history to reach the 30 home run mark.
 
The Eagles took a 3-0 lead after three innings, but fell victim to a seven-run fourth inning by Akron. Another run in the sixth inning was able to trim the Akron advantage to 7-4, but the Green and White would get no closer. With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, freshman pinch hitter Allison Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) struck out, ending the game.
 
EMU out-hit the Zips in the contest, 10-8, but left eight runners on base. McKenna Russ (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover), Sarah Gerber (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) and Jenny Scherer all totaled two hits in the game.
 
The Eagles and Zips will conclude their series tomorrow, April 5, with first pitch at noon.
