YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Going for its third straight victory, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team was derailed by Oakland University in non-conference action here at the Convocation Center, Oct. 6, in four sets (16-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-25).
Playing without seniors, Victoria Randolph (Cincinnati, Ohio-Mount Notre Dame) and Kim Jarzynka (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Baldwin), the Eagles struggled to find any sort of rhythm throughout the match. Oakland never trailed in the first set, jumping out to a 21-11 lead before sealing it, 25-16.
The Golden Grizzlies recorded a .273 hit percentage and were led by Adrienne Leone's six kills in 12 total attacks. Ashley Nevelle had 11 assists in the first set alone. EMU's Jennifer Swartz (Canton, Mich.-Westland John Glenn) hit .444 with four kills and 2.5 blocks on her way to a big night.
In the second set, the Eagles held an 11-8 lead before Oakland rallied off four straight points and eight of the next 10 overall. Despite hitting just .069 in the set, the Grizzlies still managed to out-hit EMU (.043). The Green and White prolonged the set on set point, cutting the deficit to 24-23, but one of Meghan Bray's game-high 19 kills finished it off for the Grizzlies and gave the Oakland a 2-0 lead.
Eastern Michigan took advantage of an Oakland letdown in the third set by out-hitting them .156 to .061. Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) threw down four kills and Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) added eight assists to lead the Eagles to a 25-19 set win.
Oakland more than made up for the previous set by making short work of the Eagles in set number four. Bray led the way once again with six kills and Nevelle added 10 assists en route to a 25-15 set win for the match.
Iaquaniello and Swartz recorded 13 and 15 kills, respectively. Iaquaniello also added 11 digs, giving her six double-doubles on the season. Swartz accounted for a team-high 19 points to go along with four total blocks. Mason chipped in 39 assists.
Next up for the Eagles is Mid-American Conference opponent, Western Michigan University. The teams will face off Friday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. in Kalamazoo, Mich..
