EMU wins for the first time in program history at Kent State
KENT, Ohio - The Eastern Michigan University soccer team picked up an historic win in defeating the Kent State University Golden Flashes in Mid-American Conference action, 3-1, Sunday, Oct. 12 at the Kent State Soccer Field. Head coach Scott Hall recorded the 100th victory of his career, becoming only the second active MAC coach to reach the 100-win plateau. Sunday’s victory also marked the first time in program history the Eagles have won at Kent State.
With the win, EMU improves to 8-3-4 overall while sporting a 3-1-3 mark in MAC play. Kent State falls to 5-8-0 and 2-4 in conference action.
The Golden Flashes got on the board first, scoring when Caitlin Hester found the back of the net off a deflected throw-in, putting the home team in front 1-0 in the 29th minute of the first half. The Eagles did not waste much time responding to the goal, as Chelsea Detrick (Grosse Pointe, Mich.-Grosse Pointe) made good on a penalty kick with less than seven minutes remaining in the half, knotting the game at 1-1.
Coming out after halftime, the Eagles went on the offensive, scoring a little over eight minutes into the second frame. Katie Lozar (Broadview Heights, Ohio-Brecksville) got one past the goalie to put EMU in front, 2-1, with Stephanie Janssens (Novi, Mich.-Novi) picking up her sixth assist of the season. The Eagles tacked on another goal in the 71st minute, when Carissa Wilson (Linden, Mich.-Linden) scored off a rebound.
Sophomore Maggie Manville (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) got the starting nod in goal, making seven saves while allowing just one goal.
The Eagles return home to Scicluna Field next weekend, playing host to Toledo and Bowling Green. First up for the Green and White is MAC Tournament Champion Toledo Friday, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m. Bowling Green then comes to town for a Sunday tilt, with kick-off set for 1 p.m. The BGSU game marks the last regular season game at Scicluna Field, with seniors Jessica Lathrop (Indianapolis, Ind.-Lawrence North), Ashley Upton (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) and Katie Zundel (Utica, Mich.-Henry Ford II) being honored before the game.
