YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team continued its domination of Oakland University, posting a 3-0 victory Tuesday evening in non-conference action here at the Convocation Center. Senior Becky Reenders (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) paced the EMU offense with a match-best 16 kills and an EMU Convocation Center record .696 attack percentage (16-0-23) in the victory.
YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team continued its domination of Oakland University, posting a 3-0 victory Tuesday evening in non-conference action here at the Convocation Center. Senior Becky Reenders (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) paced the EMU offense with a match-best 16 kills and an EMU Convocation Center record .696 attack percentage (16-0-23) in the victory.
With the win the Eagles improve to 12-5 on the season and push their winning streak over the Golden Grizzlies to 20 consecutive matches dating back to Oct. 15, 1977. On the other side of the court Oakland falls to 5-11 on the year.
The EMU offense, which hit a solid .265 for the game, saw senior Abby Reenders (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) post a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Senior Katie Bates (Delta, Ohio-Evergreen) chipped in 10 kills of her own, with senior Kate Sulewski (Ottawa Lake, Mich.-Bedford) adding 40 assists and four kills.
For Oakland, Monica Frechen had nine kills, with Amy Golem recording eight kills. Setter Katy Wilson had 18 assists on the night.
In the first game, Eastern would race off to a 12-5 advantage before Oakland was forced to burn a timeout to stop the run. OU would cut into the deficit to five, 17-12, but the Green and White would post 13 of the next 20 points to take the game, 30-12
The second game saw the match’s only tie and lead change, as Oakland would record the first point of the stanza before Eastern would roll off six straight to make it 6-1. From that point on the Eagles would never look back with Oakland never able to get any closer than three points the rest of the period.
Oakland struggled offensively in the third game, committing six errors for a .128 hitting percentage. As was the case in the previous two frames, EMU raced off to an 8-3 edge before pushing the margin to 11, 20-9. EMU’s lead grew to as many as 14, 29-15, before closing out the game, 30-17, and the match, 3-0.
Eastern Michigan now puts its unblemished 2-0 Mid-American Conference record on the line this weekend, with a pair of West Division road contests against Western Michigan, Sept. 28, and Northern Illinois, Sept. 29. First serve for both matches is set for 7 p.m.
