Sophomore Maggie Christensen nets lone goal
YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University women’s soccer team dropped its season opener tonight, 3-1, to the Eastern Illinois University Panthers. EIU scored three second half goals to spoil the season opener held today at Scicluna Field.
The Panthers connected on three of seven shots-on-goal taken, while the Eagles were just one for eight.
Sophomore Maggie Christensen put EMU up 1-0 on her first goal of the 2007 season, just 12 minutes into the game. Senior Sara Schiffbauer recorded the assist, her first of the season.
With only seven minutes gone in the second half, the Panthers were able to tie the game up with a Michelle Steinhaus goal, assist coming from junior Ashley Slota. Steinhaus would strike again with the go-ahead goal at the 57:00 mark for EIU, putting the Panthers up 2-1.
Sophomore Rachel Hamilton would increase the Panther lead to 3-1 with her first goal of the season with less than one minute remaining in the game.
The Eagles will pick up action again on Tuesday, Sept. 4 against University of Detroit-Mercy. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be held in Detroit, but construction on the field forced the move to Scicluna Field.
