EMU (24-19) took an early 2-0 lead but could not hold it as Oakland (15-29) stormed back and had it way with the Eagles’ pitching staff scoring 10 runs on 16 hits. Sophomores Bobby Henderson and Jeff Robinson along with freshman John Ballarin also had a tough time allowing a combined six runs on 10 hits.
The Eagles’ pitching staff didn’t get much help at the plate as freshman OU pitcher Chad Yinger shut down EMU’s offense allowing only five scattered hits and four runs across 6.2 innings of work. Sophomore Andrew Marshall led EMU going 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored courtesy of his third home run of the season. Freshman Aaron Crooks and Ken Battiston, sophomore Jim Gulliver and senior Mike Boyd were to only other Eagles to record a hit.
Six OU batters recorded multiple hits led by Justin Wilson who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
EMU’s 2-0 lead came off a throwing error by the shortstop, which enabled Boyd to score from third base and a RBI single by Gulliver to plate Crooks in the top of the third inning.
After Oakland to a commanding 7-2 lead in the sixth inning, EMU cut into the deficit on Marshall’s two-run home run to pull within, three at 7-4.
However, the Golden Grizzlies got three insurance runs in the eighth and ninth inning to pull away for the 10-4 victory.
