Baseball Blasts Rockets, 12-1

Eagles notch 12 runs on 14 hits while limiting Toledo to three hits
YPSILANTI, Mich. – Behind an explosive offense and solid pitching, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team snapped a three-game losing skid defeating the Toledo Rockets, 12-1, in conference action here Friday night at Oestrike Stadium.
EMU (25-21, 17-3) pounded 14 hits and scored in each of the first five innings. The Eagles were led by senior Derek Lehrman who went 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and a run scored courtesy of a grand slam home run. Junior Steve Bradshaw hit a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored while junior Jeff Hehr went 2-for-4 with five RBI, two runs scored and his team leading seventh home run of the season.
Junior Jeff Fischer (6-4) picked up the win with another good performance on the mound pitching six scoreless innings allowing only one hit with six strikeouts. Freshman Rob Wenzicki tossed the final three innings allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
Toledo (23-23, 11-11 MAC) pitcher Mike Inselmann picked up the loss allowing eight runs on seven hits in just 2.2 innings of work. The Rockets were led by Jake Oester who went 2-for-4 hitting a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to break up EMU’s combined shutout pitching effort.
EMU jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Lehrman’s grand slam home run in the first inning.
Hehr drove in another two runs on a RBI double in the second inning to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead. Sophomore Kyle Rhoad laced a two RBI single to plate Aaron Powell and Jeff Davis in the third extending EMU’s lead to 8-0.
After getting an unearned run in the fourth, Hehr capped off EMU’s scoring hitting a three-run shot over the left field fence in the fifth inning for a commanding 12-0 lead.
Game two of the three game series between EMU and Toledo is Saturday, May 12 at 5 p.m.
