HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis team opened its spring schedule this afternoon (Jan. 19), traveling to Huntington, W.Va. for a tri-meet with Marshall University and Moorehead State University. EMU paired off against former Mid-American Conference rival Marshall, in today’s matches and were swept by the No. 60 ranked team in the country according the latest Fila/ITA Tennis Rankings.
The Eagles were unable to get into a groove as they dropped each singles match in straight sets. In the much anticipated match between two nationally ranked players, Marshall’s Kellie Schmitt, who is ranked No. 18 in the latest Fila/ITA National Rankings, was able to defeat EMU’s No. 45 ranked Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany-Albertus Magus Gymnasium) 7-5, 7-5.
In doubles action, the Eagles’ number one team of Frankowski and Yana Parfenyuk (Ominsk, Russia-School #64) took on the No. 35th ranked doubles team in the nation, Kellie Schmitt and Lynzee Kever. The match was hard fought by both teams, but in the end, the Thundering Herd were able to close out an 8-6 victory to lead the way for the No. 60 team in the country.
The Eagles will look to pick up action again in Huntington, stringing the rackets for tomorrow’s showdown against Moorehead State. Start time for the match is T.B.A.
