EMU Bows Out of MAC Tournament with 11-2 Setback to Miami

KENT, Ohio -- The Eastern Michigan University baseball team was ousted from the 2006 MAC Tournament by Miami, 11-2, here at Schoonover Stadium in Kent, Ohio. The RedHawks jumped out to an early 5-0 advantage and never looked back en route to the nine-run victory. The Eagles end the season with a 27-27 record, after making the conference tournament for the first time since the 2004 campaign.

Miami (32-23, 17-10) got to the EMU pitching staff early in the game tallying 11 runs on 13 hits. Will Stewardson (3-4) picked up the loss and closed out his impressive college career. The Eagles were led offensively by sophomore Josh Ivan and freshman Aaron Powell who both went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Senior pitcher Graham Taylor picked up the win for Miami going 8.0 innings with four strikeouts while allowing only two runs on nine hits. The RedHawks were led offensively by Eric Darlage who hit 4-for-4 with four RBI three runs scored and a home run.

Miami struck first in the top of the second inning plating five runs on five hits to take an early 5-0 lead. EMU responded in the bottom of the frame cutting the lead to, 5-2, as Isaiah Gainforth reached on a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded to plate Derek Lehrman with Powell also scoring on a throwing error by the second baseman.

Miami got another run in the third on a double steal attempt as second baseman Ivan dropped the throw from catcher Brian Blackburn. The RedHawks then added another two runs to take a commanding 8-2 lead.

The RedHawks blew the game open in the fourth inning on a Darlage three-run homer for an 11-2 advantage.

The Eagles got the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings but were unable to get any runs across the plate stranding 10 runners for the game.
