Women's Tennis Zips Past Akron

Eagles improve to 3-2 in MAC action with 7-0 blanking of the Zips

AKRON, Ohio
—The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team got back on track with a 7-0 dual-match victory over the University of Akron here Saturday at the LaTuchie Tennis Center. After dropping a 5-2 conference decision Friday to the University at Buffalo, Head Coach Craig Capelli's Eagles came back with the win over UA. EMU is now 8-8 overall and 3-2 in Mid-American Conference play. Akron drops to 4-12 and 0-4.

The Eagles started the win over the Zips with a bang, winning all three doubles matches for a quick 1-0 lead. EMU's No. 1 doubles team of Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany-Albertus Magus Gymnasium) and Yana Parfenyuk (Ominsk, Russia-School #64) defeated UA's team of Tanya Gombera and Jenna Larson, 8-4, while the No. 2 team of Aditi Krishnan (Merkhem,Ontario-Canada-Markville Secondary School) and Elizabeth Syrova (Montreal, Quebec, Canada-Ecole Secondaire Jean XXIII Dorval) defeated Akron's Alyssa Carlson and Amy Sherlock, 8-6, and the No. 3 squad of Laura Fernandez (La Vega, Dominican Republic-Colegio Inmaculada Concepcion) and Flavia Micatia (Rio de Janerio, Brazil-Cejo Terejopolis RJ) notched an 8-4 decision.

The Eagles then moved smoothly through singles, winning all six matches in straight sets. Syrova started things off at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 7-6 (6) win over Gombera. Krishnan then bounced Larson, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2. Frankowski defeated Akron's Sherlock at No. 3, 6-4, 6-2, with Parfenyuk notching a 6-0, 6-0 win over Carlson at No. 4. The Eagles then took the final two singles matches with Catherina Bestahorn (Ebenhausen, Germany-Iching Gymnasium) winning at No. 5 by a score of 6-0, 6-2 and Fernandez taking the 6-1, 6-3 decison at No. 6.

Eastern wraps up the three-match road swing tomorrow, April 9, with a non-conference dual at Youngstown State University.
