Volleyball Dominates Oakland in Home Opener

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team swept a visiting Oakland University squad, 3-0 (30-20, 30-19, 30-18) here Tuesday night at the Convocation Center in non-conference action. With the victory the Eagles improve to 6-4 on the season, while the Golden Grizzlies drop to 1-13.

The two squads battled back and fourth until EMU went on a 14-4 run to take a 20-10 lead. The Eagles advantage stayed at 10 points the rest of the game, as EMU took the first set by a score of 30-20. Junior Lindsay Piccolini chalked up seven kills and one block assist in the game, while sister senior Bethany Piccolini added four kills.

In the second game, EMU jumped on the board first and never looked back as Oakland never led in the game. Eastern took the game by a score of 30-19, to take a 2-0 mark heading in to the intermission. Sophomore Corey Calcamuggio led the way with a game-best five kills, while sophomore Melissa Bartlett tallied three kills.

In the finale, the Green and White started strong out of the gate taking a 7-6 lead and saw its advantage grow on the strength of 13-3 run. OU was never able to get any closer then 10, as EMU took the game and the match.

For the game, EMU was paced by Lindsay Piccolini with 13 kills and four block assists for a total of 16.0 points. Sophomore setter Kate Sulewski recorded 36 assists, while senior Becky Baltare posted 16 digs.

The Eagles hit the road for the Mid-American Conference lid-lifer against Northern Illinois, Sept. 23. Game time is set for 8:05 p.m. at Victor E. Court in DeKalb,
