Wheeler, Keppler and Gates Lead Eagles at EMU Classic
Keppler ties school record in the pole vault
YPSILANTI, Mich-The Eastern Michigan University women’s track and field team had a strong outing at the EMU Classic here Saturday afternoon at Bob Parks Track in Bowen Field House. The Eagles had three individual winners along with one relay.
Andrea Wheeler continued to drop her time in the 60-meter hurdles. In the preliminary races, she qualified for the finals by finishing fifth in a time of 9.05 seconds. In the finals, she cruised to a first place finish, dropping her time by more than three-tenths of a second to 8.72 seconds.
Janice Keppler continued her dominance in the pole vault. She won the event for the fifth time in six tries. She vaulted 13-05.75 to tie the school record held by Hanna Palamaa.
Jasmine Gates won the high jump, clearing 5-06.00 to tie her personal-best in the event. She was also part of the winning 4x400-meter relay team that ran a time of 3:54.81. Other members of the relay included Lauren Quaintance, Brittany Lockhart and Morgan Newman.
Dejaa Shearer had another successful day in both the 200 and 400 meters. In the 200, she finished third in a time of 25.85 seconds. In the 400, she also finished third with a time of 57.47 seconds.
Melissa Green had a second place finish in the mille in a time of 5:05.79. Quaintance had a top-eight performance in the 800 meters, running a personal-best time of 2:17.41.
The Eagles head to Ann Arbor for the final meet of the indoor season, the Silverston Invitational, Saturday, Feb. 23.
