The Eagles Split Twin Bill Against Miami

4/7/2018 6:39:00 PM | Softball

Akles pounded out a pair of homers, moving her to sixth in program history with 20 career home runs

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team split a twin bill against Miami University, Saturday, April 7, at Varsity Field. The Eagles (6-27, 2-8 MAC) overpowered the RedHawks (14-17, 3-6 MAC), 8-2, in the opener before slipping, 6-2, in game two.

Junior Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) continued to shine at the dish, where she went 2-for-3 on the day, including two home runs and four walks. Akles moved up in the record book as she now is now sixth in program history with 20 career home runs.

Game 1: Eastern Michigan 2, Miami 8
In the circle, the Eagles benefited from a spectacular day by freshman Kiara Hurley (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee). Hurley (1-4) went the distance in her first complete game of the campaign, striking out a season-high six, and allowing just five hits.

The Eagles had an outstanding day at the dish, tying a season-high 11 hits, the most since the Green and White produced 10 against Louisville, March 10. Freshmen Lauren Holdsworth (Howell, Mich.-Ladywood) and Sophia Holland (Lugoff, S.C.-Lugoff-Elgin) both had multi-hit outings, as Holdsworth produced a game high three hits, while Holland went 2-for-3 at the plate. Both freshmen notched RBIs, with Holland adding a pair of runs to her stat line.

The RedHawks took advantage of a pair of walks in the opening frame to grab an early 1-0 lead over the Green and White, but Eastern did not stay silent for long.

With bases loaded and one out, senior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) ripped a single up the middle to plate freshman Casey Skeens (Poca W. Va, Poca). Holland tallied her sixth RBI of the campaign as her sac-fly to center allowed junior Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) to slide into home. Eastern did not stop there as Holdsworth dished a single to left, allowing Akles to cross home plate.

Miami cut into EMU's lead with a third-inning run, but Eastern extended its lead with four runs in the bottom of the frame.

Leading off, Akles got the scoring frenzy started with her first homer of the day. Holland kept the momentum going with a single to right, before advancing to third on a Holdsworth double. After a walk loaded the bases, junior Sam Isaly (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman) blasted the ball to left, allowing Holland to score. The Eagles plated another runner just two batters later as senior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) took a pitch to the knee. Rounding out the lineup, Logan smacked a single to right, plating junior Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern Commerce), giving EMU a 7-2 edge.

The Green and White took advantage of a wild pitch in the fourth frame to cap the 8-2 victory.

Game 2: Eastern Michigan 2, Miami 6
The Eagles struggled to connect at the plate in the nightcap as they were held to just three hits. Akles was 1-for-1 with her second dinger of the day, while Skeens and Holdsworth both dished out singles in the loss.

After Miami used a sacrifice fly in the second to grab an early lead, Akles knotted the score back up with her fourth home run of the series.

It was a pitchers dual until the fourth when Eastern plated its second runner to take the lead from MU. Leading off, Hostetler reached on an error before coming around to home off an Olmos' sac-fly.

Eastern Michigan's 2-1 lead held until the fifth, when the RedHawks mounted a comeback. Miami used a five-run inning to hold a 6-2 edge over the Eagles.

On the mound, senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) earned the starting nod, and through four innings of work, fanned five batters. Trujillo was ultimately sacked with the loss, moving her to 3-9 on the season, as she gave up six hits and five runs, four of which were earned. Both Hurley and junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-California) made appearances in relief through the final three frames.

The Eagles get back into action on Tuesday when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to take on the Michigan Wolverines. Action is slated for 4 p.m.
