Amanda Akles cranked out a three-run homer against Alabama State
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team used two outstanding plate performances to pick up a pair of victories Friday, March 2, at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational. The Eagles (4-8) used a season-high nine hits to defeat Central Arkansas (5-8) before topping Alabama State (3-8) on the strength of a three-run home run in the first inning.
Junior Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) was a force to be reckoned with at the dish. Over the two-game span, Akles went 5-for-7, including her first home run of the season against UCA to go along with four RBIs. Fellow junior Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) also had an outstanding offensive performance as she pelted four hits in eight at-bats, including a perfect 3-for-3 plate appearance against Central Arkansas.
Game 1: Eastern Michigan 6, Central Arkansas 3
The Green and White out-hit UCA, 9-8, while tying a season-high nine RBIs. The Eagles defense complemented their offensive efforts as EMU forced the Bears to strand 12 runners through the seven innings.
Central Arkansas jumped to an early 1-0 lead after a double to right field., but the Eagles answered right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.
After junior Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) reached on a catcher's interference, Logan brought her home with massive triple to tie the game. Akles stepped up to the plate next and ripped a single to left field to score Logan and hand Eastern the lead.
The Eagles did not stop there as they plated three more runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Green and White loaded the bases after senior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) was walked, and two batters later, EMU tacked on a pair runs thanks to a Logan single through the left-side. With runners on the hot corners, Logan was called out on a run-down, but it allowed Hostetler to come across home, giving Eastern a four-run edge.
The Bears were able to score a runner in the third inning to cut EMU's lead to three, but that would be as close as UCA would get in the afternoon.
Senior Angel Schilke (Saline, Mich.-Saline) pelted out her fifth hit of the season in the sixth frame, before stealing second as Hostetler stepped up to the plate. Hostetler registered her third RBI this campaign after her double brought Schilke around to score.
On the rubber, senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) picked up the win as she struck out six, while giving up eight hits and three runs, two of which were earned. Trujillo came in clutch in the seventh as UCA was able to load the bases, but the senior settled in and struck out two consecutive batters to come out unscratched, capping the win.
Game #2: Eastern Michigan 4, Alabama State 1
The Eagles kept up the momentum at the plate as they produced a whopping seven hits against the Hornets. Akles paced the Green and White with 3 hits on four at bats, to go along a game-high three RBIs.
A three-run blast from Akles in the first inning propelled Eastern to an early 3-0 lead, one the Eagles refused to relinquish for the remainder of the night.
Alabama State's only run of the night came in the top of the third when a Hornet blasted the first pitch over the fence.
The Green and White put itself back up by three in the bottom of the fifth. Eastern Michigan loaded the bases with two outs, as Schilke steped up to the plate. The Saline, Mich. native was patient, ultimately getting walked, bringing freshman Lauren Holdsworth (Howell, Mich.-Ladywood) in from third.
Pitching her fourth complete game this season, junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) gave up only two hits while striking out three, moving her to 2-4 on the season.
The Eagles return to the diamond Saturday, March 3, when they face Northern Kentucky University at 1:30 p.m. before going head-to-head with LIU Brooklyn at 4 p.m.
