Nine Eagles will compete in the championship finals
OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team qualified 14 swimmers for Friday evening's champion session after a solid performance in the preliminary session, March 2. Nine of EMU's 14 qualifiers will compete in the championships heats, as the Eagles look to improve upon their second-place standing.
In the 400 individual medley, sophomore Parker Saladin (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) paced the Green and White with a career-best time of 3:54.67, which ranked sixth in the prelims and moved him into the championship heat. Additionally, Saladin's impressive mark is the seventh-best time in program history.
A pair of Eagles will be representing Eastern in the 100 butterfly tonight as senior Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) and freshman Chris O'Shea (Miller Place, N.Y.-Rocky Points) snagged spots in the top-five. Burton turned in a season-best time of 47.32 to take second, while O'Shea was slotted fifth with a career-best time of 48.20.
Eastern Michigan had a lot of success in the 200 freestyle as five Eagles return to the pool tonight after claiming spots in the top-15. Junior Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate) and freshman Carter Swift (Shepparton, Victoria, Australia) paced the Green and White as they swept the top-two spots. Tyson used a season-best time of 1:35.96 to win the prelims while Swift followed right on his heels with a career-best time of 1:36.82. Junior JF Murphy (Montreal, Quebec-Sainte-Anne) also earned himself a lane in the championship final as he turned in a season-best time of 1:38.98 for eighth-place. Sophomores Alex Arrieta (Miami, Fla.-Doral Academy Center) and Tanner Olmos (Clovis, Calif.-Buchanan), and freshman Alec Hoch (Orchard Park, N.Y.-Orchard Park) can all earn points for EMU tonight as they will compete in the consolations final.
Two more swimmers made the cut for EMU in the 100 breaststroke. Sophomore Matthew Tsenkov (Sofia, Bulgaria-General Vladimir Stoychev) led the way with a career-best time of 55.13, the sixth-fastest in prelims, while freshman Ben Gingher's (Boalsburg, Pa.-State College Area) 14th-fastest time earned him a lane in the 'B' final.
The session ended on a high note for Eastern, as the Green and White claimed a pair of top-three finishes in the 100 backstroke. Junior Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) clocked the top time in the pool at 47.34, besting the pool by over a second. Kawaguchi's career-best time is now the second-best mark in program history. Rounding out the top-three was Burton, who turned in a season-best time of 48.62. Sophomore Matan Segal (Lehavim, Israel-Hof HaSharon) and junior Ricky Perez (Greenfield, Wis.-Greenfield) qualified for the consolation finals with 9th and 12th-place finishes, respectively.
The 3-meter diving preliminaries are underway and the swimming championship heats will begin tonight at 6:30 p.m., beginning with the 400 IM. The 3-meter finals will take place tomorrow night, March 3, in the final session of the week.
