EMU matched USM with nine hits
PENSACOLA, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team saw an early lead slip away against No. 15 University of Southern Mississippi Friday night, March 2 in the opening game of the Cox Diamond Invitational at Blue Wahoos Stadium. The Eagles (1-8) jumped out to a 3-0 lead before falling to the Golden Eagles (7-2), 9-4.
Eastern Michigan cranked out nine hits, tying USM. Freshman Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) led the Green and White, going 2-for-3 with a double, and was the lone Eagle to record a multi-hit effort.
On the rubber, junior Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma) went two scoreless innings without a run charged to his line, while adding a career-high four K's in relief. Junior Mitchell Sparks (Willis, Texas-Carmal (Ind.) (Iowa Lakes C.C.)) also had a scoreless inning in relief, with a strikeout.
EMU took the lead in the third, following a one-two-three inning for Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) in the top half. Senior Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic) opened the frame with a single, before advancing to second on a balk. A bunt single by Hager put runners on the corners.
After a fly out and a Hager stolen base, sophomore Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown Community) singled to the right side, scoring DeVenney. Junior Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) kept things rolling with a sac fly to push Eastern's lead to two. Sophomore Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) capped the three-run frame with an RBI single, giving Eastern Michigan a 3-0 edge into the fourth. In all, the Green and White plated three runs on five hits.
The Eagles' lead was short lived, as the Golden Eagles manufactured four runs on three hits and two walks to take a 4-3 lead with EMU coming to bat in the fourth. After Southern Miss added an insurance run in the fifth to take a 5-3 advantage, freshman Thomas House (Okeana, Ohio-Ross) entered in relief and ended the threat with a strike out.
EMU could not muster much in the bottom half of the fifth, going down in order. Remaining on the bump, House struck out the side to keep the Eagles within two, 5-3, through five.
The Golden Eagles tacked on four runs in the seventh to extend their lead to six, 9-3. The Eagles got one back in the bottom half courtesy of a redshirt freshman Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, MIch.-Brother Rice) RBI groundout, but could not come all the way back in the five-run defeat.
Eastern Michigan returns to action tomorrow, March 3, against Nicholls State. First pitch from Blue Wahoos Stadium against the Colonels is set for noon.
