The dual was highlighted by a major decision from Zac Carson
MT. PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team wrapped Mid-American Conference dual action with a 29-7 road setback at No. 16 Central Michigan University Friday evening, Feb. 9, at McGuirk Arena.
In a match that was delayed two hours due to heavy snow in southeast Michigan, the Eagles (7-7, 3-4 MAC) battled hard against a fierce CMU (8-4, 5-1 MAC) lineup which featured seven nationally ranked wrestlers.
The Eagles notched a pair of wins on the day, highlighted by a major decision from redshirt sophomore Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake). Carson moved his overall record to 17-10, as well as 10-4 in dual action.
CMU started with a tight win at 125 lbs., but EMU returned the favor at 133 lbs. After a scoreless first, redshirt sophomore Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) worked a takedown in the second to lead 2-0 into the third. In the third, he was ridden almost the whole period, but escaped right before the buzzer to get the 3-1 win, and tie the team score up, 3-3.
EMU then dropped the next three matches, but all by close decisions to nationally ranked grapplers, to give CMU a 12-3 lead at the intermission.
The Eagles broke the streak at 165 lbs. as the No. 2 conference ranked Carson worked up a 7-2 lead after two periods. He kept piling up the points, and went on to get a major decision over the No. 3 ranked MAC wrestler, Logan Parks, 14-5. Carson's third major decision of the season gave him his sixth win in his last seven matches, and completed his MAC dual record at 6-1. It also moved EMU closer in the team score, 12-7.
Central pulled away, however, as the Chippewas won the last four matches, with two via bonus points, to take the dual, 29-7.
EMU wraps up dual action next Friday, Feb. 16 ,when it heads back north for a tri-dual in East Lansing, Mich. Eastern begins the day at 4 p.m. when it takes on Clarion University, followed by a bout with the host Michigan State University Spartans at approximately 6 p.m.
