LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – In its first action of the 2018 spring season, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the Mid-American Match Play Challenge on the par 72, 6,068-yards Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club course. The ninth-seeded Eagles fell to No. 8 UNC Asheville, 4-1, in the opening round before knocking off the 10th-seeded Flyers of the University of Dayton, 4-1, in the consolation bracket.
Against the Bulldogs, junior Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) picked up the Eagles' lone victory with a 3&2 victory over Janie Thomas. The Saint Maur Des Fosse, France native's match was all-square through the eighth hole before back-to-back victories on No. 9 and No. 10. Thomas would pull back with one, but Guilleux would respond with wins on No. 15 and 16 to close out the match.
In the nightcap, Head Coach Pina Gentile's crew rolled to victories in four of the five matches played against the Flyers. Returning from a fall injury, sophomore Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 5&3 decision over Makenzie George. Senior Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) won four consecutive holes to build an insurmountable advantage over Ellie Cronin. Guilleux remained perfect on the day with a 1 up victory, while freshman Preaw Sripatrprasite (Bangkok, Thailand-Siam International) picked up her first career match play victory with a 2 up decision.
Eastern Michigan will now face No. 11 Central Michigan, who fell to No. 12 Fort Wayne in the consolation bracket.
