CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University junior baseball player Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) was named the Mid-American Conference's Male Scholar Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 25, the conference announced Wednesday, Feb. 28.

The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented weekly to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition.

It is the first weekly honor of Schuemann's career and the first for the EMU baseball team this season. It coincides with female track and field athlete Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83) who took home the female honors this week as well. The infielder currently holds a 3.78 grade point average as a marketing major.

The Portage, Mich. native had another monster week for EMU, following up his big opening weekend. In four games, Schuemann batted .412 (7-for-17) with three home runs, including one that was inside the park, for a slugging percentage of .941.

He added five runs batted in and six runs scored, as well as six stolen bases. For the season, Schuemann is now batting .500 (18-for-36) through eight games with nine steals. All told, he ranks top-30 nationally in five major offensive categories, including first in steals and 3rd in total hits.

EMU returns to the diamond this weekend, March 2-4, for the Cox Diamond Invitational in Pensacola, Fla. The three-game neutral site event begins Friday, March 2, with a single game against the No. 15 ranked University of Southern Mississippi starting at 7 p.m. ET.
