Eagles Beat Golden Flashes in Kent For First Time in Over 20 Years

KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team picked up its first Mid-American Conference win of the season against Kent State University, Sunday, Feb. 25. The 194.775-193.925 victory over the Golden Flashes serves as the first win in Kent, Ohio, for the Eagles in over 20 years.
The day was highlighted by EMU notching the two highest event scores of the season, as Eastern marked a 49.125 on floor and a 49.050 on vault. The two scores were also just the second and third time the Eagles surpassed a 49.000 this season.
EMU began its day on bars, earning its fourth-best score this season in the event with a 48.575. The squad was paced by freshman Jada Rondeau (Norwood Young America, Minn.-Central) who led the Eagles with a new career-best score of 9.85. Senior Jules Schwartz (Gilbert, Ariz.-Mesquite) also put together a routine that earned her a new bars personal-record, as she notched a 9.775. Sophomore Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) continued the consistency she has employed all season, marking a 9.75 on bars for the fourth straight meet.
The Eagles' second-best team performance of the day and on the season came on vault, where they put together six solid performances to notch a 49.05. The event began with four straight personal-records on vault, and ended with five of the student-athletes earning a new career-best. Scwartz led the Eagles with a personal-best 9.875, winning the lone EMU event title for the day. Junior Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill.-Sacred Heart Classical Center) notched a 9.85 to surpass her old record. Additionally, freshman Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline), redshirt freshman Allison Smith (Telford, Pa.-Souderton), and Dobronics each earned 9.775s for their vaults, with Harden and Smith's both serving as career-bests. Rondeau rounded out the Eagles' performances with a personal-record setting score of 9.725.

Adding to the already-impressive amount of personal-records set on the day, Smith rounded out her pair of performances this meet by notching another career-high, this time posting a 9.75.
The Green and White rounded out its day on beam, amassing a team score of 48.025. The event was led by Hultgren, who started off the routines with a career-high 9.85. Additionally, Marino joined the plethora of gymnasts who marked new personal-bests, earning a 9.8 for her performance.
EMU returns to MAC competition next weekend as the Eagles face off against Ball State in Muncie, Ind., Sunday, March 4. Action is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
