BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)
– The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team won its fifth Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship Saturday, Feb. 24, inside Perry Field House. The day was highlighted by 14 performances which earned medals, including seven first-place finishes.

"I'm incredibly proud of the team," Head Coach Sue Parks said. "We were disappointed to lose the indoor championship at home last year and that was on our minds as we prepared for this indoor season. We started the season out well and we never let up.  The girls have been focused on getting back this championship for an entire year and they were not about to be denied. The distance runners set the tone with a great 1-2-3 in the mile at the beginning of the meet but it was really a total team effort. Everyone who competed in the meet worked hard to try to score points for the team. It was an amazing day and I'm really excited about the performance of this special group of athletes."

The running events began with EMU getting off to a hot start in the sprinting events. Senior Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area) finished out her incredible indoor career at EMU by winning gold in both the 200m and 400m dash with times of 23.98 and 54.56, respectively. For her efforts, she was awarded the Most Outstanding Track Performer. Junior teammate Jessica Harris (Slidell, La.-Slidell) also hand an outstanding day in the 60m, taking third with a time of 7.55.
Of the 14 total medals earned in today's competition, eight came from the mid-distance/distance crews.

Starting with the 800m, seniors Jenna Wyns (Londerzeel, Belgium-Sportschool KA2) and Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley) continued their dominating nature in the 800m run, winning gold and silver with times of 2:09.97 and 2:10.09, respectively.

Cizmas also had an incredible performance in the mile, as she led the Eagles with a time of 4:52.27 to finish first. Following right behind Cizmas was Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) and redshirt senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83), as they placed second and third to complete the podium sweep. Meyers finished right on the heels of Cizmas, crossing in 4:52.86, while Bogdanova rounded out the top-three, bringing home bronze with a time of 4:54.00. However, that was just Bogdanova's first medal of the day, as she went on to earn silver in the 3000m with a time of 9:34.09 before capturing gold the 5000m with an impressive time of 16:35.47. Bogdanova's all-around spectacular conference meet earned her Most Valuable Performer.

Additionally, Meyers also brought home multiple medals, as she placed first in the 3000m along with the second-place finish she notched earlier in the mile. Senior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) also ran strong in the 3000m, crossing in 9:36.36 to claim fourth. McDermitt's best performance of the day came in the 5000m, where she won silver with a time of 16:35.54.

Both relay teams also had outstanding showings, with the distance medley relay team notching first place while the 4x400 relay squad earned second. The DMR squad consisted of Meyers, freshman Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start), Wyns, and Cizmas, ran to a 11:36.79, while sophomore Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian), freshman Michaela Nelms (Rocky Mount, N.C.-Nash Central), Gibson, and Jones all contributed to the 4x400 team's time of 3:43.56.

Senior Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia-Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) had EMU's highest placement in the field events, which came in the form of her performance in the high jump, where she notched a height of 1.67m.

Given the team's awe-inspiring success in both the regular season and conference championship, Head Coach Sue Parks rightfully earned MAC Head Coach of the Year.

The Eagles will now wait and see if any individuals earned a spot in the upcoming NCAA Championships, which will be held in two weeks, March 9-10, down in College Station, Texas.
