The Eagles defeated both Rhode Island and Manhattan on the day

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla (EMUEagles.com) –The Eastern Michigan University softball team used some late-game heroics Friday, Feb. 23, to pick up a pair of victories at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational. The Eagles (2-5) used a walk-off single in the 11th inning to top Rhode Island (1-4), 4-3, before breaking a seventh inning tie to clip Manhattan (0-1) in the nightcap.

Overall, it was day that the EMU pitching staff excelled with 18.0 innings of work with just one earned run surrendered. GAME 1: Eastern Michigan 4, Rhode Island 3
Rhode Island built a 2-0 edge through the first five frames, but Eastern clawed back with lone runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. The first career hit by freshman Lauren Holdsworth (Howell, Mich.-Ladywood) plated sophomore Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern Commerce) to knot the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, the Rams found a hole in Eastern's defense in the ninth to retake the advantage at 3-2. The Green and White answered right back in the bottom of the frame with junior Alex Peters (Oscoda, Mich.-Alpena) scampered to third on a sacrifice bunt. With the table set, sophomore Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern Commerce) brought her home with a bunt single to make it 3-3.

The Eagles were able to keep URI at bay in the top of the 11th, giving them the prime opportunity to score. After opening the inning at second, Olmos advanced to third on a wild pitch. She came around to score three pitches later run when junior Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) slapped the ball in left field for the game winning knock.

On the rubber, junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) went the distance with a career-high 11.0 innings of work. Miranda (1-2) also tied her season-high with seven strikeouts while giving up six hits.
