BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - After closing out the regular season this past weekend, the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team now shifts its focus toward the Mid-American Conference Championship, which will be held Friday-Saturday, Feb. 23-24 in Bowling Green, Ohio. The Eagles look to bring home the title for the third time in four years after missing out in last year's conference competition.
Although the Green and White came up just short in last season's indoor championship, finishing just six points behind first place, the Eagles had plenty to be proud of and return much of the talent from last year's roster. In fact, seven out of the eight student-athletes who earned All-MAC honors return for this weekend's competition, including five First Team All-MAC honorees. Additionally, redshirt senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83) and junior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) warrant extra attention after they earned Most Valuable Performer and Most Outstanding Track Performer in last season's indoor championship, respectively, as well as both having incredible regular seasons this year.
Most recently, Bogdanova was a member of the distance medley relay squad who put together an EMU record-setting time of 11:00.51 at the Alex Wilson Invite, Feb. 17, which currently ranks third in the nation and first in the conference. Along with ranking first as a member of the DMR team, Bogdanova also currently holds the top time in 3000m and the 5000m, as well as fourth in the 800m and eighth in the mile. Joining her in the top teir of the 3000m rankings are seniors Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley) and Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison), who rank second and third, respectively. Cizmas is also slotted third in the 5000m and sixth in the 800m.
Eastern's dominance this regular season has expanded to more than just the distance runners, as the sprints crew also holds most of the top rankings in their respective events. Senior Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area) holds the top spots in the conference for both the 200m and 400m dash, while sitting in fifth in the 60m and also acting as a leg of the record-setting DMR team. Alongside Jones is junior Jessica Harris (Slidell, La.-Slidell), who ranks second in the 60m and fourth in the 200m. Sophomore Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) also finds herself in the thick of things, as she holds the second best time in the 400m and fifth fastest mark in the 200m.
Leading most of the Eagles in the field events this season is senior Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia-Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1), who took bronze in the long jump and placed fourth in the triple jump during last year's indoor title meet. Currently, the Ventspils, Latvia native finds herself with the second-best distance in the triple jump, fourth-highest mark in the high jump, and seventh-longest distance in the long jump for the conference.
Overall, EMU has 23 top-six rankings, and holds the top spot in six-of-the-17 total events.
The MAC Indoor Championships are slated to begin Friday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m. starting with the heptathlon 60m dash. Running events are scheduled to commence at 2:30 p.m. with the 60m hurdle preliminaries. Competition continues Saturday, Feb. 24, as the day opens with the heptathlon 60m hurdles at 10 a.m. Running events will take place in the afternoon, beginning at 1:30 p.m. with the men's mile run.
