Eastern managed back-to-back sweeps in a span of 12 hours
SAN MARCOS, Texas (EMUEagles.com) – For the second consecutive day, the Eastern Michigan University tennis team pulled off a sweep of their opponent, this time tossing aside Texas State University, 4-0, on a rainy afternoon at Bobcat Tennis Facility.
Merely 12 hours after defeating Incarnate Word, 6-0, Eastern (6-3) was once again forced into a shortened match because of inclement weather, this time playing through the elements outdoors at Texas State's (0-6) home court.
"To me, this may be our best match of the season," said head coach Jayson Wiseman. "This is the first time that we put in really exceptional effort on the second day of back-to-back matches. To be able to get two straight singles sweeps in very difficult conditions with rain, cold, limited facilities, and all on the road shows just how mentally tough this team can be."
Senior Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) got the Eagles off to a solid start, winning at the top singles spot 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. Picking up where she left off from the previous match, junior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) won 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. Senior Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) took the No. 4 match by a convincing 6-4, 6-2 score, while freshman Giuliana Ansaloni (Bergamo, Italy-Centro Studi Leonardo Da Vinci) won 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 3. Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) did not finish their respective matches with EMU already wrapping up the victory.
"I'm very hopeful that we can carry over these types of performances into the rest of our season and particularly our MAC matches," said Wiseman. "If we can play with that level of determination and mental toughness we will definitely be difficult to beat."
Eastern's schedule has been slightly altered Thursday, Feb. 22. Instead of playing McNeese State in the morning, the Green and White will now only face Lamar at 3 p.m. in Beaumont, Texas.
