YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics announced today, Feb. 21, several events and celebrations for fans at the Saturday, Feb. 24, men's and women's basketball doubleheader against Northern Illinois University. The men's team plays first at 12 p.m. with the women's game to follow approximately 30 minutes after the first game concludes.
As a part of fan appreciation day, those attending the contest can purchase tickets for just $5.
With a planned "Green Out" at the Convocation Center, all fans attending the Mid-American Conference battle are encouraged to wear green-colored clothing to the game. Additionally, upon entrance to the doubleheader the first 1,500 fans will receive an EMU drawstring backpack. Doors to the Convocation Center will open at 11 a.m.
It is also Girl Scout Day as well as Mascot Day at the Convocation Center with numerous troops and mascots scheduled to be in attendance. Fans can also load up and get their fix of Girl Scout Cookies, which will be on sale in the atrium.
During the pregame warmup, EMU Head Men's Coach Rob Murphy will hold a special ceremony to celebrate the career of senior Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College High School). Bond has a chance to make Saturday extremely special, as he is just two steals shy of breaking Earl Boykins' all-time record (220) and seven points away from joining the 1,000-point club.
The EMU men's team, which has won five of its last six games, is currently tied with instate rival Western Michigan University for the fourth-best record in the conference. The Eagles control their own destiny with three games remaining for a bye in the first round of the upcoming 2018 MAC Men's Basketball Tournament. The opening round of the tournament is scheduled for Monday, March 5, before the action shifts to Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, March 7-10.
EMU Head Women's Basketball Coach Fred Castro will lead his team onto the floor at approximately 2:30 p.m. The Green and White look to sweep the season series after knocking off the Huskies in an earlier meeting this season in DeKalb, Ill. The Eagles are currently the eighth-seed in the upcoming conference tournament, but sit just two games out of a possible first round bye to Cleveland.
