Team USA will train in Ypsilanti beginning, May 31
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Head Rowing Coach Kemp Savage has been selected to lead US Rowing's women's team at the World University Championships, Aug. 10-12, in Shanghai, China. Additionally, the team will utilize EMU's boathouse and Ford Lake for its training camp, May 31-Aug. 12.
"I want the thank Gregg Hartsuff for bringing both the men's and women's World University Training Camps to Ypsilanti," Savage said. "It is such a prestigious benefit for the rowing and sporting community of Michigan to host national team prospects in a training camp. Events like this are helping to realize the potential of the EMU Boathouse and Ford Lake as a top tier rowing venue. Finally, it is an incredible compliment to be selected to lead the women who will be racing for Team USA and to build the speed together to win international medals."
After spending six seasons as an assistant coach, Savage was promoted to EMU's Head Coach ahead of the 2014-15 season. During his tenure in Ypsilanti, Savage has guided EMU to its best finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships in program history with a pair of third-place finishes, while coaching five All-CAA honorees and three CAA All-Academic Team awardwinners. Additionally, he coached Krista Burdick to Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-Central Region honors as she became just the fifth Eagle to reel in all-region accolades in program history.
Prior to joining the EMU rowing staff, Savage spent 2006-07 as the assistant coach for the Old Dominion University club rowing team before taking over as head coach for the 2007-08 season. Under Savage, the ODU men's novice team placed first at the American Collegiate Rowing Association Nationals, while the women's varsity team placed third.
Savage will announce the rest of his staff later this month, while the team will be finalized by March 18.
