Three three-set victories in singles helped improve Eastern to 2-0
LINCOLN, Neb. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over the University of South Dakota, Friday, Feb. 2 at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska.
"This was a hard fought win that really could have gone either way with four three-set matches," said head coach Jayson Wiseman. "We did a great job of starting fast in the doubles and we able to secure that point with solid wins at no. 1 and no. 2."
EMU started the match by securing the doubles point thanks to a 6-2 win at no. 1 by junior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) and freshman Giuliana Ansaloni (Bergamo, Italy-Centro Studi Leonardo Da Vinci), and a victory at no. 2 doubles by senior duo Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani).
The Eagles and Coyotes locked in four epic battles at the top four spots, with the Green and White securing three-set wins at no. 1, 3, and no. 4. Ansaloni got Eastern off to a strong start with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win, and after losses at no. 5 and 6, Gogvadze put EMU back in the driver's seat with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory. Martinovska wrapped up the match-deciding point with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win at no. 4.
"Ani and Giuliana both did a great job of coming back from first set losses to win their matches, and Andrea did a fantastic job of recapturing the momentum to win after dropping the second set," said Wiseman. "Overall, this was a great effort from the entire team to get to 2-0 and I'm very pleased to get a win over such a solid South Dakota team."
Eastern returns to action Saturday, Feb. 3 with a 12 p.m. match against Colorado State, once again on the campus of the University of Nebraska at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
