The four signees will join the Eagles for the 2018 season
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Head Women's Soccer Coach Scott Hall announced the signing of four high school seniors to national letters of intent Tuesday, Feb. 13. The group consisting of Simone Chiodo (Oshawa, Ontario-Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic), Emma Collins (Windsor, Ontario-St. Anne), Kylie Frantz (Erie, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy), and Lara Wheeler (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) will join the Eagles for the 2018 season.
"This is a great class for Eastern Michigan," Hall exclaimed. "These four players bring excitement and balance to an already great and talented young team."
"Simone is another fine product from the Durham region, adding to the stout talents already on our roster from the area," Hall added. "She brings a high work rate and great soccer IQ to our team, and can play anywhere throughout the midfield as well as on the backline."
Chiodo hails from Oshawa, Ontario, where she was a four-year letterwinner at Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School. As a Saint, the 5-foot-4 center midfielder led her squad to a LOSSA Championship on the pitch en route to being named the team's most valuable player. A well-rounded athlete, Chiodo also lettered in volleyball, badminton, basketball, and flag football. In volleyball, she also reeled in team MVP honors. Chiodo adds to a talented group Hall and assistant coach Joe Malachino have pulled out of Ontario, as the Oshawa native joins a squad with Durham products Parys Kerr, Kristin Nason, and Sabrina McNeill.
"Emma is a versatile player that can attack and defend and brings with her an incredible attitude toward training and a competitive spirit," Hall said. "We loved that she can play anywhere on the field and excel in each position. She played multiple sports throughout high school that gave her a variety of experiences that we feel will allow her to take off in our system at EMU."
Collins, club teammate of Wheeler on Nationals Union Black, comes to the Green and White from Windsor, Ontario. A two-way player, Collins was a four-year letterwinner at St. Anne High School where she reeled in a number of accolades, including all-conference and all-region honors.
"An attacker, Kylie is a specialty player who can create chances for others and has a knack for scoring goals herself," Hall shared. "She will find spaces in behind our frontrunners distributing to scoring opportunities."
Frantz comes to Ypsilanti out of Erie, Pa., and bolsters an already strong group of attackers for the Eagles. A four-year letterwinner for Villa Maria Academy, she served as a team captain as a senior. A 5-foot-4 midfielder, Frantz led her team to a state championship in 2015, as well as three straight District 10 Championships. A three-time all-region selection, Frantz was named to the second team as a sophomore, before picking up first team honors as a junior and senior. Additionally, she was a three-time MVP.
"Lara is another super athlete that is extremely versatile," Hall stated. "She can play as an attacker or defender and is effective at both. She plays hard every game with good endurance, which will translate well to our tough conference weekends where we have to compete in two hard games."
A 5-foot-6 defender, Wheeler is the lone Michigander in the class and joins the Green and White alongside club teammate Collins. A native of Grand Blanc, Wheeler was a three-year varsity player for Grand Blanc High School. As a defender, she led the Bobcats to two regional championships, three district championships, a KLAA Conference Championship, and a pair of state finals appearances. For her role in the Bobcats' success, Wheeler was named all-district, all-region, All-KLAA, and also added all-academic honors.
