Eastern took the doubles point as well as wins in three of the top four singles
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team evened its record on the season thanks to a 5-2 victory over Cleveland State at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion Sunday, Feb. 11.
Eastern (3-3) got on the right track thanks to a win in doubles, as they began with an advantage because of a Vikings' forfeit at No. 3. Needing one match for the victory, Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani)) came away with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
"We didn't come out with nearly the energy and enthusiasm that we had yesterday, but at the end of the day we found a way to get the win.," said head coach Jayson Wiseman. "Cleveland State has been playing a woman down for the entire semester which means they are almost always starting every match in an 0-2 hole. I give their squad a lot of credit for really battling and making us earn every single point today."
As with doubles, Cleveland State surrendered victory at the final spot, giving freshman Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) a win by forfeit. The Eagles took firm control of the match when junior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) defeated her foe at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-4. EMU continued its march towards victory with Martinovska's 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 4, and wrapped up the final point with a Gogvadze 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1.
EMU hits the road for its next eight matches, beginning with a match at Oral Roberts University Sunday, Feb. 18.
