EMU once again tied in dual wins, 5-5
NORFOLK, Va. (EMUEagles.com) – For the second straight dual, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team fell just short, falling to Old Dominion University, 19-18, in Mid-American Conference dual action Sunday afternoon, Jan. 7, at the Ted Constant Center.
EMU (4-5, 0-2 MAC) once again tied its opponent in dual victories, 5-5, but ODU's (3-3, 2-1 MAC) four bonus point wins to EMU's one proved to be the decisive factor in the one-point defeat. Eastern's bonus points came from redshirt sophomore Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake) via pin at 165 lbs. It was Carson's third pin of the season and his second in dual action.
Old Dominion started the dual with a bang, notching a technical fall, but redshirt sophomore Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) got the Eagles on the board at 133 lbs. with a solid 5-0 decision, to make it a 5-3 team score after two.
At 141 lbs., ODU won another close bout, 9-6, but was deducted a team point for misconduct, making it just 7-3 heading into 149 lbs. That match ended up being one of the most thrilling of the afternoon.
Redshirt senior Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) controlled the match through two periods, 7-2, but an offensive explosion in the third led to a 12-12 tie and overtime. In the OT period, Springer got the decisive takedown to win in sudden victory, 14-12, and make it a one-point match, 7-6.
The Monarchs would not yield the lead at the midway point though, getting more bonus points at 157 lbs. via a major decision, to put them up by five, 11-6.
Coming out of the break, Carson gave the Eagles a huge spark when he notched a pin to catapult the Eagles ahead for the first time, 12-11. The sophomore led 6-1 after one, and was able to get the tilt at the start of period two to notch the fall in 3:26. The win moved him to 6-3 in duals on the season.
Another bonus point win for ODU, a major decision at 174 lbs., gave them the lead back, 15-12, with just three weight classes remaining. ODU got its fourth bonus point win at 184 lbs. with the third major decision, extending the advantage to 19-12.
Eastern gave itself a chance in the penultimate bout, as redshirt junior Kayne MacCallum (Green Oaks, Ill.-Libertyville) wrestled up a class for the second time this season, and got his second win of the year at 197 lbs. with a 6-1 decision. He moved his dual record to 6-3 as well with the win. Going into heavyweight, EMU trailed 19-15.
Needing a bonus point win in the final match, No. 17 nationally ranked redshirt senior heavyweight Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) stepped on to the mat. Despite his best efforts, ODU's wrestler avoided the big loss, as Hutchison battled his way to a 2-0 decision to end the dual on a win, but falling just short in the team score, 19-18. Hutchison moved to 12-4 on the season and 6-1 in duals.
The Eagles return to the mat next Saturday, Jan. 13, when they head to Columbia Mo. to face off with nationally ranked University of Missouri. Action against the Tigers is set to begin at 1 p.m, ET.
