YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team dropped its Mid-American Conference home opener in heartbreaking fashion, falling 75-71 in overtime to Bowling Green State University Saturday, Jan. 6, inside the Convocation Center.
The Eagles (9-6, 0-2 MAC) erased a late four-point deficit to force the extra session and had the ball and an opportunity to win the game on the final possession of regulation. Eastern fell victim to a shot clock violation, however, and the Falcons (10-5, 1-1 MAC) rode the momentum in the extra session, as EMU fell for the first time this season inside the Convocation Center.
Redshirt junior Paul Jackson (Stone Mountain, Ga.-Martin Luther King Jr. (Eastern Kentucky)) paced the Eagles with 21 points and five assists, while pulling down four rebounds. James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) played all 45 minutes and recorded his 10th double-double of the campaign, tallying 14 points to go with a team-best 14 boards. Redshirt junior Elijah Minnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Lincoln Park (Robert Morris)) tallied 15 points, seven rebounds, and a pair of steals, while senior Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College High School) added 16 points and was one of four Eagles with at least two assists.
EMU shot 40 percent from the floor, connecting on 22-of-55 field goal attempts, including 9-of-25 from beyond the arc. BGSU had a slim advantage on the offensive end, shooting at a 41.3 percent clip on 26-of-63 shooting. EMU out-blocked BGSU, 5-2, but the Falcons narrowly out-rebounded the Eagles, 38-37.
EMU's defense was superb for much of the first frame, at one stage holding BGSU without a field goal for over six and a half minutes. Bond's second three-pointer of the contest gave the Green and White their largest lead of the half, 24-13, with 3:45 remaining in the opening period. The Eagles withstood a late rally from the Falcons and took a 30-29 edge into the locker room.
The game went back and forth in a hotly contested second half featuring several ties and four lead changes. Trailing 66-63, Thompson sank a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to one with 1:43 remaining in regulation. The Eagles then got a stop on the defensive end, forcing BGSU into a shot clock violation with 1:10 left in the second frame.
On EMU's ensuing offensive possession, Minnie drew a foul and two opportunities at the charity stripe, converting on his second attempt to even the score, 66-66, with 1:00 left in regulation. Again, the Eagles stood tall on defense, and regained possession with just over 30 seconds remaining in the second period. However, the Eagles were unable to attempt a field goal, and were hit with a shot clock violation of their own with 1.4 seconds left in the second half as the game headed to overtime.
After the Falcons hit a three-pointer to re-capture the lead, Jackson responded with a layup to trim BGSU's lead to 69-68 with 3:20 left in overtime. The visitors then pulled away, outscoring the Eagles in the extra session, 9-5, as EMU fell by a four-point margin.
Eastern Michigan wraps up a two-game home stand when it hosts in-state rival Central Michigan Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.
