Eagles Take First Dual of 2018 Against Youngstown State

EMU swept the doubles before winning the match

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team won its opening dual of 2018 with a 5-2 victory over Youngstown State University, Jan. 26, in Ypsilanti, Mich.

"It is really great to start off the season with the win and get my first win as coach out of the way early in the season," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "Having coached in the Horizon league, I know how good YSU is every year, Coach Sopel is an excellent coach and his team's have consistently finished at the top of their conference. Getting a win against a team that has competed in the NCAA tournament three or four times in the last five years, and beat us 4-3 last season is something our team can definitely build on."

The Eagles started their day off strong, sweeping the doubles to take the first point and secure an early lead in the match. The duo of senior Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) and freshman Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) notched the first victory of the day with a dominating 6-2 win in the No. 3 doubles. Seniors Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) and Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) followed with a strong 6-4 win of their own in the No. 2 doubles to lock up the point, before senior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) and freshman Giuliana Ansaloni (Bergamo, Italy-Centro Studi Leonardo Da Vinci) solidified the sweep, capping off a back-and-forth affair with a 7-6 victory.

"Our team came out ready to play and did a great job of securing the doubles point. Having that 1-0 lead is always a huge advantage, on top of that our seniors did a great job of going out and clinching the match with wins at #1, #4, and #6. Alejandra and Andrea played really well and dominated their spots and Ani played a really great match where she just refused to lose."

Singles were kicked off by Martinovska and Almoyna taking both sets in their respective games to give EMU three points and a comfortable advantage early. However, Gogvadze put a nail in it with a 6-2 effort in her game's tie breaker to give Eastern its fourth point and the win. Additionally, Mayerova pulled out her set, outlasting her opponent, 6-4, in the tiebreaker to earn the Green and White's fifth point.

EMU picks things back up Fri.-Sun., Feb. 2-4, for a three-game road swing located in Lincoln, Neb.
