EMU posted three season-high team scores
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team dropped its dual against Bowling Green State University, 195.025-193.950, Friday, Jan 19, in Bowling Green, Ohio.
"Overall I thought we had a lot of great individual performances from both our upper and underclassmen," said Head Coach Katie Minasola. "We had three athletes compete in the all-around tonight and it was great to see Kendall compete in the all-around along with Megan and Emili. Freshman Megan Benzie performed a great floor routine, while Cali made her way into the line up with a big vault. With this team's potential, I am excited to get back in the gym this week to prepare for next weekend. We had some shining moments this meet but we are still working on putting it all together."
The Eagles notched season-high team scores in vault (48.650), beam (48.450), and floor (48.550), but couldn't overcome BGSU's final score and season-high, 195.025. Overall, EMU had multiple career-best performances and season-highs, including an impressive day from sophomore Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg), who marked a new career-high in the all-around with a 38.925, which earned her second-place behind fellow teammate and senior Kendall Valentin (Holmdel, N.J.-Holmdel), who posted a 38.975. Additionally, redshirt senior Lacey Rubin (Plainview, N.Y.-Plainview Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) tied for a share of the bars title with a 9.775.
The Green and White began its day on bars, notching a team score of 48.300. Rubin paced the Eagles with a 9.775, while Valentin finished with the second-highest team score, earning a 9.750.
EMU took it up a notch on vault, earning a 48.650 to mark a new season high in the event. The Eagles were led by Valentin, who also created a season-best mark with a 9.825. However, Eastern was consistent all the way through the lineup, as junior Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill.-Sacred Heart Classical Center) bounced back from her bars routine to earn a 9.75, while Dobronics and senior Jules Schwartz (Gilbert, Ariz.-Mesquite) each earned a 9.7. Additionally, redshirt freshman Allie Smith (Telford, Pa.-Souderton) tied her career-high with a 9.675, and freshman Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline) marked a 9.65 in her first official event as an Eagle.

Freshman Megan Benzie (Roanoke, Va.-Cave Spring) and Dobronics both earned 9.775 for their routines, with Benzie's serving as a new career-high. Senior Megan Marino (Girard, Ohio-Howland) was consistent from start to finish, marking a new season-best with a 9.7. Freshman Jada Rondeau (Norwood Young American, Minn.-Central) posted her second-best floor performance of the season with a 9.675.
EMU ended its day with season-high 48.450 on beam, led by a pair of 9.775's earned by Dobronics and Valentin, while Hultgren put a cap on her day with a 9.675, totaling an all-around score of 37.8.
The Green and White pick back up Saturday, Jan. 27, when they compete in a quad hosted by Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich, which will also consist of Rutgers and Pittsburgh. Action is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
