Eagles search for their 12th consecutive MAC dual win on Friday
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team welcomes 2018 with back-to-back duals this weekend, Jan. 19-20. The Eagles will host Mid-American Conference foes Ball State University Friday, Jan. 17, before driving down I-94 to battle in-state rival Wayne State University Saturday, Jan. 18. EMU, not having lost a MAC dual since the 2014-15 season, is looking for its 12th consecutive MAC dual win against BSU.
The Green and White open the 2018 portion of its schedule after an outstanding performance at the EMU Invitational Dec. 1-2. The Eagles ran away with the two-day meet, posting a final score of 1,300.5 points to best a field that included Wayne State, Tiffin, Albion, and Ball State. Junior Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) paced EMU with three individual event wins for a meet-high 60 points, while also aiding her cohort to a first-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay. The Dayton, Ohio product had an impressive showing in the mile where she used a season-best time of 16:29.67 for a then-best time in MAC this campaign before taking the top spots in the 400 IM and 500 free. Junior Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) swept the breaststroke events while seven other Eagles registered an event win.
The Eagles own a 22-14-1 all-time record against the Cardinals since their first meeting in 1977. Most recently, Eastern clipped BSU, 179-115, Oct. 31, 2015. In the Halloween showdown, 10 Eagles recorded first-place finishes, while Carly Jackson paced the Green and White with two individual event wins. Then-sophomore Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser) and then-freshman Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) both placed first in the 1-meter dive and 100 breast, respectively.
Eastern is undefeated against the Warriors of Wayne State since the two squads first went head-to-head in 2001. Last year, the Eagles opened up the 2017 portion of their schedule with a dominating, 179-85, win over WSU. The Green and White won every event but one, as Swartz and then-freshman Brielle Johnston (Ottawa, Ontario-Catholique Franco-Quest) both reeled in two event wins.
Due to mechanical issues at Jones Natatorium, action between the Eagles and the Cardinals has been moved to Milan High School in Milan, Mich. and slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19. Fans can follow along with the action here or on the MeetMobile app. On Saturday, the meet between EMU and Wayne State inside the WSU Natatorium is schedule to start at 1 p.m. with live results available on the MeetMobile app.
