EMU won two bouts, including a major decision from Kyle Springer

COLUMBIA, MO. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team battled, but were ultimately overwhelmed by No. 4 University of Missouri, 35-7, in Mid-American Conference dual action Saturday afternoon, Jan. 13, at the Hearnes Center.

The Eagles (4-6, 0-3 MAC) won two bouts on the day, both from their senior leaders. Redshirt senior Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) won his match via major decision, while fellow redshirt senior No. 17 Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) won in overtime.

All in all, EMU went up against eight nationally ranked opponents on the Tigers (13-0, 4-0 MAC), losing four by bonus points.

The Tigers used nationally ranked grapplers at the first three weight classes to take an early 12-0 lead heading into 149 lbs. There, Springer went to work, notching takedown after takedown to rack up 20 points and win by 20-7 major decision to cut it to 12-4. Mizzou responded with a quick pin at 157 lbs. though to spring back ahead 18-4 at the intermission.

Out of the break, the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked wrestlers in the MAC squared off in No. 23 nationally ranked Connor Flynn and redshirt sophomore Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake). It was a tight bout all the way throughout, but Carson came up just short of the upset, falling by 9-7 decision. Another pin by the Tigers at 174 lbs. made it 27-4 with just three weight classes to go.

The Tigers won the next two by decision and technical fall to put the advantage at 35-4 going into heavyweight. No. 17 nationally ranked heavyweight Hutchison had another tight match, going to overtime, but he was able to notch a reversal in the extra period to win the bout, 3-2, and end the dual on a high note.

The Eagles finally return to Ypsilanti for their home opener inside the Convocation Center, Friday, Jan. 19, when they take on Northern Illinois University. Action against the Huskies is set for 7 p.m.
