BOSTON (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University junior men's basketball player James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) was named to the 2017-18 Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch list Thursday afternoon.
The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I mid-major player. The 2017-18 Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award will be announced on March 31, 2018 at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Event in San Antonio, site of the men's NCAA Basketball Championship.
Lou Henson coached 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State. He is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.
Thompson goes into this weekend's games averaging 15.8 points and 11.7 rebounds per contest, having most recently picked up his Mid-American Conference-leading 11th double-double of the season with a 17-point, 12-rebound performance in the Eagles' victory over Central Michigan. The junior is among the upper-echelon of big men in all of college basketball. Not only does he rank fifth in rebounds per game (11.7), he's also sixth in double-doubles (11), and is seventh in field goal percentage (67.1). The Baton Rouge, La. native is also the national leader in rebound average for a career (11.1 rebounds per game), and is fifth in NCAA Division I in career rebounds (897), trailing four seniors.
