Each week two Eagles will be honored for their success on the field
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Each week, the Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics names the EMUCU's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic media relations department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are football athlete Brody Hoying, and volleyball athlete, Jordan Smith.
Brody Hoying
Sport: Football
Position: Defensive Back
Year: Redshirt sophomore
Major: Supply chain management
Week's Achievements: Sophomore Brody Hoying (Coldwater, Ohio-Coldwater) continued his incredible season this weekend, leading Eastern Michigan's defense in an overtime game against Ohio, Sept. 23. Hoying paced the Green and White with a career-best 10 tackles, eight solo and two assisted, while also making his presence known in the turnover game as he has done all year. Having already registered a pair of interceptions in EMU's first two games of the season, Hoying recorded a career-high two forced fumbles against the Bobcats. The Coldwater, Ohio native also recovered a fumble, running it back 40 yards to set the Eagles up with prime field position, ultimately leading to a field goal. Hoying is one of just three players in the country, and the only player in the MAC, to have recorded at least two interceptions and two forced fumbles so far this season, doing so in just three games.
Jordan Smith
Sport: Volleyball
Position: Outside Hitter
Year: Junior
Major: Psychology
Week's Achievements: Junior outside hitter Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) helped lead the Eagles to a 1-1 weekend to begin Mid-American Conference play, averaging 3.00 kills per set and 2.57 digs per set. The Solon, Iowa native turned in 3.29 points per set in the two matches and co-led the Eagles with 13 kills against MAC West preseason favorite Ball State. Smith finished the weekend with 21 total kills, 18 digs, two blocks, one ace and one assist. Smith's efforts helped the Eagles reach their ninth win of the season, surpassing their 2016 total with 14 matches to play.
