FULL SCHEDULE
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team announced its schedule Wednesday, Sept. 13, for the upcoming 2017-18 season. The Eagles will compete in 15 duals this season, including three contests at home.
Eastern Michigan enters the fourth season under the direction of Head Coach David Bolyard. In his third season at the helm, Bolyard and the Eagles went 6-8 in duals, including a solid four dual wins on the road. The Eagles were rewarded for their efforts at the end of the season by sending three wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. This was the fourth time in six seasons EMU has sent at least three grapplers to the national tournament.
The Eagles will face off against one of the toughest schedules in the country competing in the Mid-American Conference. Last season, the conference sent the fourth-most wrestlers to St. Louis. Overall, a pair of MAC schools finished last season ranked in the top-25 of the National Wrestling Coaches Association/USA Today poll, with Missouri at No. 10, and Central Michigan at No. 17. In addition to MAC foes, EMU will also square off with two Big Ten opponents, Indiana and Michigan State.
Eastern begins the season away at Gardner- Webb, Nov. 3, kicking off the first of 15 duals this season. They then travel to Buies Creek, N.C., Nov. 5, to face host-Campbell and American in the first of three tri-duals. Meanwhile, the non-starters will remain in Michigan and travel to East Lansing to compete in the MSU Open that same day.
The Eagles then come home, Nov. 11, to compete in the EMU Open at the Convocation Center, before heading to Philadelphia, Pa. to wrestle in the Keystone Classic, Nov. 19. They then travel down to Bloomington, Ind. to compete in their second tri-dual of the season against the host Hoosiers and Binghamton, Nov. 26.
EMU will fly out to Las Vegas to contend in the Cliff Keen Tournament, Dec. 1-2. They then make a stop at Cleveland State for a dual, Dec. 8, before returning there for the CSU Open, Dec. 16. Finishing out the calendar year, the Eagles will face off in the prestigious Midlands tournament, Dec. 29-30, in Evanston, Ill. Last season, then-junior Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) took fourth at the heavyweight division, the highest finish for an EMU wrestler since 2000.
To start 2018, Eastern will go on a three-dual away stand to face Ohio (Jan. 5), Old Dominion (Jan. 7), and Missouri (Jan. 13), all of which are MAC duals for EMU. The Eagles have their home opener against Northern Illinois, Jan. 19 before taking a week off ahead of their next home contest against Buffalo, Feb. 2. In between duals, non-starters will travel to battle in the Edinboro Open, Feb. 3. Eastern will then have its last home MAC dual against Kent State, Feb. 4.
To wrap up the regular season, EMU will travel to rival Central Michigan, Feb. 9. The Eagles then travel up to East Lansing to compete in the last tri-dual of the season against host MSU and Clarion, Feb. 16.
The 2018 MAC Championships will be held in Mount Pleasant at CMU, March 3-4. The EMU wrestlers who make the NCAA Championships will head to Cleveland, Ohio for the national tournament at Quicken Loans Arena, held March 15-17.
