This will be the fourth consecutive year the Eagles participate in the event
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team heads to East Lansing Friday, Sept. 15, to compete in the Spartan Invitational. The meet will feature competition against multiple conference opponents as well as nationally-ranked Michigan State.
The Spartans came into the season directly behind the Eagles on the national preseason poll at No. 23, and currently remain right behind EMU in the regional rankings, which were most recently updated by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), Tuesday, Sept. 12.
Last year, the event featured five D1 teams, including three other MAC programs in the form of Miami, Central Michigan, and Kent State. In total, the meet featured 410 runners. EMU came away with a second-place finish, totalling 42 points and finishing four harriers within the top-50.
Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge) led the Eagles, crossing the line in 25:00 to finish fourth. Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium-Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) followed right behind him, finishing in eighth place with a time of 25:11. Additionally, Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio-Defiance) put together a strong performance, placing 15th in 25:23, while John Knox rounded out EMU harriers inside the top-50, coming in at 36th with a time of 25:49.
This year, EMU returns each of the three harriers who finished inside the top-15 in 2016. However, none of the Eagles who competed in last year's Spartan Invitational have yet to see competition in 2017, as the first two meets of the season have been used as opportunities for the freshman class to gain experience.
The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m. at Forest Akers East Golf Course.
