YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - A 96th-minute header by freshman Marla Cobetto (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) and a five-save effort from junior goalkeeper Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) pushed the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team past Oakland University, Sunday afternoon, Sept. 10, at Scicluna Field. The win moved the Eagles to .500 on the year at 3-3-1 and marked the second shutout of the weekend for the Green and White.
In 96 minutes of action, the Eagles outshot the Grizzlies, 18-12, with sophomore Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) leading all players with five. The Green and White offense garnered a season-high 11 corner kicks, but could not capitalize.
Defensively, Williams notched the ninth shutout of her career. Additionally, the clean sheet gave Williams and the Eagles back-to-back shutouts for the first time since Oct. 14-16, 2016, when Eastern blanked conference foes Ohio and Kent State.
The Eagles set the pace in the opening minutes, rattling off four shots in the first 10 minutes to keep the Golden Grizzlies' defense busy. In spite of the looks, Eastern's offense had difficulty finding the back of the net, totaling 10 shots and five corner opportunities in the first 45 minutes of play. Williams was rock solid in the first period, tallying two saves and breaking up a handful of OU scoring chances.
A textbook-perfect cross by sophomore Maggie McCullough (London, Ontario-Oakridge Secondary) barely missed junior Peyton Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-Holy Name), and a shot by senior Chanel Vani (Brampton, Ontario-Cardinal Leger) went above the keepers hands but slammed against the crossbar, keeping the game scoreless early.
In the final seconds of the half, freshman Chloe Chatzis (Macomb, Mich.-Henry Ford II) delivered a cross to Cobetto, but the attempt was saved by the keeper.
The intensity remained strong in the second half as both sides traded fouls and critical scoring chances with the score locked at 0-0. In the 47th minute, sophomore Nicole Remedios (Ajax, Ontario-Archbishop Dennis O'Connor) stepped to the corner flag and delivered the ball to the middle of the box, where redshirt junior Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) headed the ball towards the goal but was blocked by a OU defender.
With just 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Oakland had a dangerous break-away on a counter, but freshman Tessa Osborne (Mentor, Ohio-Lake Catholic) broke it up, booting the ball out of bounds. The Green and White answered back with its own break-away led by Nason and Cobetto, but Cobetto's off-balanced shot was saved by the keeper. Eastern Michigan tallied six shots in the second half, while Oakland had seven.
Going into overtime, freshman Alia Frederick (Linden, Mich.-Linden) got a good look on goal in the first minute, but Oakland's keeper made the stop to keep the game going. Maintaining constant pressure of the Golden Grizzlies defense, the Eagles drew a foul across midfield, but an offsides call whistled the play dead. Garnering another foul 10 yards inside of midfield seconds later, Remedios stepped up to take the free kick. With a flock of Eagles working in the 18, Remedios delivered a cross to the middle of the box, where Cobetto soared above her mark and headed home the game-winner.
Eastern Michigan finishes its three-game homestand against Utah State, Friday, Sept. 15. Kickoff between the Eagles and the Aggies is scheduled for 5 p.m.
