Football Wraps Up Second Day of Fall Camp

First-year offensive coordinator Aaron Keen spoke after practice

XENIA, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football team continued to get its preseason reps at the Athletes in Action Sports Complex & Retreat Center, as the Eagles completed their second practice of the fall Thursday, Aug. 3.

One of the newest wrinkles of camp has been the offensive adjustment under first-year Offensive Coordinator Aaron Keen, who served the previous three years as the Eagles' special teams coordinator and tight ends coach. Thankfully, the adjustment of sliding over from being a position coach to coordinating the entire offense has been a smooth one for the Cheyenne, Wyo. native.

"The benefit I've had of being on staff the last three years is that I've worked with all these guys on staff," said Keen. "We do have some new additions, so its taken some time to get use to one another, how we work, how drills run, and what our communication is like. That's been very smooth throughout the spring and summer and I think we are rolling here in fall camp."

No stranger to the role as offensive coordinator, Keen has done so at two previous stops before EMU, holding the position at Minnesota State University from 2011-12 as well as at the University of Nebraska-Omaha from 2008-10.

Last year, the offense ranked 35th in the FBS in total offense, posting 455.2 yards per game in 13 contests. The team also shattered the school record for total offense with 5,917 yards, breaking the previous record of 5,010. Other notable offensive highlights for the Eagles this past season include ranking 17th in third down conversions, 17th in first down offense, 19th in passing offense, and 22nd in red zone offense.

Due to the AAU Junior Olympic Games taking place at Rynearson Stadium, the Eagles are hosting their first four practices, Aug., 2-5, away from home before making the 213-mile journey back to Ypsilanti following Saturday's practice.

This practice was the second of the three-day acclimatization period where the players can only wear helmets, before donning shoulder pads on the fourth day, and finally full pads on the fifth day.  Also, a new wrinkle to the 2017 camp schedule is the elimination of two-a-days during preseason practice.

The Eagles open the 2017 season under the lights at "The Factory" inside Rynearson Stadium Friday, Sept. 1, versus Charlotte. Single-game tickets go on sale to the general public on Monday, Aug. 7. Season tickets are available for purchase at EMUEagles.com/tickets, by calling 734.487.3669 or by visiting the EMU Ticket Office daily between 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
