BOCA RATON, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – Playing through the Florida humidity, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team began the FAU adidas Owl Challenge with a 3-0 setback at the hands of tournament host, Florida Atlantic University Friday night, Aug. 25. A pair of penalty kicks allowed the Owls (2-1-0) to knock off the Eagles (1-1-1) despite EMU's 12-10 advantage in shots and 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
After trading possession in the midfield for the first 20 minutes, Florida Atlantic garnered a penalty kick in the 27th minute following an EMU foul. Stepping to the ball, FAU's Ebba Blomqvist fired a shot off, but junior Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) made the initial save before Blomqvist slotted in the rebound.
FAU doubled its lead a few minutes later, making the most of a run into the box, to take a 2-nil advantage into halftime.
Williams stood on her head in the second half, making three huge saves, to keep the Eagles within striking distance, but a goal off a penalty kick pushed the Owls edge to 3-0.
Pressing for a goal, Eastern fired off eight shots in the final 45 minutes but could not piece things together. Redshirt-junior Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson), sophomore Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street), and freshman Marla Cobetto (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) created chances, but FAU's keeper answered their challenges. Nason put a team-high two shots on frame, while Cobetto turned in one of the best outings of her young career. Ultimately, Eastern Michigan's late push fell short, allowing the Owls to take the match, 3-nil.
EMU wraps up its time in the Sunshine State, Sunday, Aug. 27, against Florida Gulf Coast University at 11 a.m.
