The capital upgrade was part of the Energy Conservation Measures project on campus

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Fans flocking to "The Factory" in 2017 will notice a major lighting upgrade just in time for the upcoming Eastern Michigan University football season. Rynearson Stadium, the home of EMU football and track, will be illuminated with high-performance energy-efficient LED stadium lights from Eaton's Ephesus Lighting, the leader in providing LED lighting solutions for sports stadiums, fields and arenas.

As part of the Energy Conservation Measures project on campus, Rynearson Stadium becomes the second sports venue to upgrade to the high-performance LED solutions. Last year, the Convocation Center was upgraded to LED lighting.

"The system provides us greater control over the lighting than ever before," said EMU Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee. "The combination of the improved lighting and fan entertainment elements coupled with the environmental benefits made this solution an easy choice. We are especially excited about showcasing the new system during the 2017 football home opener Sept. 1 against Charlotte."

The new lights will help EMU meet high-definition broadcast television standards and eliminate the need to rent temporary lights for night games. A total of 220  dimmable LED lights were installed to replace the metal halide fixtures in the facility, increasing luminance from 25 foot-candles to a minimum average of 100 fc. The noise-free LED fixtures also eliminate ambient sound in the facility.

The new light towers are 40-feet taller than the previous 100-foot tall lights towers that were installed in 1974 when the Detroit Wheels of the World Football League used the stadium as their home field.

In total, the work scope involved disassembling the six original light towers and installing six new ones, with higher lighting levels, longer life, and lower maintenance costs.

The stadium joins the growing list of prominent professional, college and municipal sports stadiums and arenas choosing an LED lighting solution from Ephesus Lighting including; U.S. Bank Stadium, the new home of the Minnesota Vikings, University of Phoenix Stadium, home field for the Arizona Cardinals, the Canadian Tire Centre, home ice of the Ottawa Senators and many more.

The LED lighting solution will provide more illumination than the previous system while requiring less watts of energy – resulting in a significant reduction in energy consumption.  Additionally, the system will be operated by a control system which provides added flexibility for facility operators and enable unique light shows and instant on/off capabilities with the flick of a switch.

Ephesus Lighting has led the LED lighting explosion at sports and entertainment facilities across North America by engineering LED lighting solutions that provide a significant increase in illumination when compared to all other lighting systems.  Ephesus' LED lighting is brighter, and through its industry-leading glare-control system its fixtures shine more uniformly on the playing surface, creating a better stage for players and fans both in the stadium and those watching on high-definition television.  The versatility of LED also allows for operational flexibility and the creation of programmable light shows for fan entertainment.  Ephesus LED solutions are easy to install, maintenance-free for years and offer facilities the lowest total operating costs.

Since lighting the first sports venue with LED technology in North America in 2012, Ephesus Lighting luminaires have been operational for over 300 million hours at indoor and outdoor sports and entertainment venues across North America.  In addition to the installations at EMU, Ephesus LED lighting solutions have been installed at other top college arenas and stadiums at the University of Florida, University of Georgia, University of Miami, Temple University, Syracuse University among many others .

The Eagles open the 2017 season under the lights at "The Factory" Friday, Sept. 1, versus Charlotte. Single game  and season tickets are available for purchase at EMUEagles.com/tickets, by calling 734.487.3669 or by visiting the EMU Ticket Office daily between 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
